Day 1 of 15

God Is Our Shelter and Strength

2 Timothy 3:14-17

14 Keep on being faithful to what you were taught and to what you believed. After all, you know who taught you these things. 15 Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. 16 Everything in the Scriptures is God's Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. 17 The Scriptures train God's servants to do all kinds of good deeds.

Romans 15:4-6

4 And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. 5 God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. 6 Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible speaks of its own purpose primarily in the terms shown in these passages: to make us wise, to bring us to faith in Christ, teaching, helping others, loving correction, showing us how to live, and giving us hope. Throughout this journey we'll draw on Scripture for many of these purposes.

When has the Bible helped you in one or more of the ways listed above?

You're already taking a first step in letting God speak to you through the Bible by signing up for this journey! Routinely spending time in Scripture is one of the fundamental disciplines of the Christian life. Stick with it throughout these 15 days and then be sure to keep going with another regular reading plan.

God, as I embark on this journey, please make me open to what you are saying to me through the words of Scripture. Amen.

1 Peter 1:23-25

23 Do this because God has given you new birth by his message that lives on for ever. 24 The Scriptures say, “Humans wither like grass, and their glory fades like wild flowers. Grass dries up, and flowers fall to the ground. 25 But what the Lord has said will stand for ever.” Our good news to you is what the Lord has said.
