Pentecost (RCL Year C Semi-Continuous)

Psalm 104:24-35

24Our LORD, by your wisdom

you made so many things;

the whole earth is covered

with your living creatures.

25But what about the ocean

so big and wide?

It is alive with creatures,

large and small.

26And there are the ships,

as well as Leviathan,

the monster you created

to splash in the sea.

27All of these depend on you

to provide them with food,

28and you feed each one

with your own hand,

until they are full.

29But when you turn away,

they are terrified;

when you end their life,

they die and rot.

30You created all of them

by your Spirit,

and you give new life

to the earth.

31Our LORD, we pray

that your glory

will last for ever

and that you will be pleased

with what you have done.

32You look at the earth,

and it trembles.

You touch the mountains,

and smoke goes up.

33As long as I live,

I will sing and praise you,

the LORD God.

34I hope my thoughts

will please you,

because you are the one

who makes me glad.

35Destroy all wicked sinners

from the earth

once and for all.

With all my heart

I praise you, LORD!

I praise you!

Isaiah 32:11-17

11Shake and shudder,

you women without a care!

Strip off your clothes—

put on sackcloth.

12Slap your breasts in sorrow

because of what happened

to the fruitful fields

and vineyards,

13and to the happy homes

in Jerusalem.

The land of my people

is covered with thorns.

14The palace will be deserted,

the crowded city empty.

Fortresses and towers

will for ever become

playgrounds for wild donkeys

and pastures for sheep.

15When the Spirit is given to us

from heaven,

deserts will become orchards

thick as fertile forests.

16Honesty and justice

will prosper there,

17and justice will produce

lasting peace and security.

Galatians 5:16-25

16If you are guided by the Spirit, you won't obey your selfish desires.17The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should.18But if you obey the Spirit, the Law of Moses has no control over you.

19People's desires make them give in to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds.20They worship idols, practise witchcraft, hate others, and are hard to get along with. People become jealous, angry, and selfish. They not only argue and cause trouble, but they are21envious. They get drunk, carry on at wild parties, and do other evil things as well. I told you before, and I am telling you again: no one who does these things will share in the blessings of God's kingdom.

22God's Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful,23gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways.24And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires.25God's Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit.
